Talk 1: “Truth? What is Truth?” The Challenge of Fake News in the Church
Presented by Michelle Tan, VP of the Catholic Lawyers Guild
Michelle talks about awareness of the different types of “Fake News” that Catholics encounter via local social media which covers a range – from the relatively benign or ignorant, to the misleading, to the downright toxic. The presentation also speaks about the awareness of the political trends in the West which could affect Singaporeans’ understanding of the relationship between faith and politics.
Talk 2: “The Truth Will Set You Free” – A Theological Reflection
Presented by Estella Young, Lay Dominican
This presentation is a spiritual reflection based on Pope Francis’ World Communications day 2018 message. It explains the causes of fake news, why fake news is so insidious and diabolical, why truth and communication are vital for human communities, and why a love of truth is a reflection of our love for God.
Talk 3: “Present yourself to God as… rightly handling the word of truth.” – How can I stop Fake News?
Presented by André Ahchak, Director of Communications, Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Singapore
In this presentation André speaks about how everyone can help stop fake news. He touches on “Gaudete et Exsultate” and how it relates to behaviour online. The Five Core Principles of Journalism are discussed, and he also speaks about what the Archdiocese is doing in meeting the challenge of fake news.
