How did they know?
There were swaying palm trees, clear pools of tranquil waters, lush greenery. It was a gift from God to me: a sanctuary, an oasis in the desert for me to enjoy.
Like the merchant, the few years of my life involved looking for pearls of ever increasing value and beauty – friends and enjoyment, good academic grades and qualifications, money and possessions. At its heart was a search for happiness.
My father simply said, “Well, you want that. It’s quite serious. If you do it, do it well.” So in September 1949, when I was 18, I went to Paris to join the MEP seminary.
Soft-spoken Christopher is proud of his Catholic education, at St. Michael’s School, St Joseph’s Institution and Catholic Junior College.
Since I entered the seminary at age 11, I will celebrate my 65th year in the priesthood this year. So if a young man wants to be a priest, he should enter the seminary quickly. I would also say, “Don’t be afraid. Pray every day. God is with you.”
