Solemn Commemoration of the 1st Good Friday at St. Joseph's Church |
Lent is a season of penitence, reflection, prayer and meditation of the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ to pay the penalty for the sins of the world, so that we sinners in turn can be granted salvation.
The Lenten Season, the most sacred part of the Christian year began on Ash Wednesday (17 February 2010) and will conclude on the Great Vigil of Easter (3 April 2010). Stations of the Cross is held every Friday at 6.30pm followed by Mass at 7:00pm until 26 March 2010.
St. Joseph’s Church, Victoria Street commemorates Good Friday in a unique and different way from the other churches. In accordance with Portuguese tradition, the 1st Good Friday is re-enacted. The life-size body of our Lord is taken down from the cross in the sanctuary of the church, placed in the bier and carried in procession followed by our Lady of Sorrows around the church compound, calling to mind Our Lady’s grief during her bereavement. Soon after the procession heads back to church, Veneration takes place.
Veneration starts immediately after the solemn service concludes until Midnight and resumes from 7am to 12 noon on Holy Saturday. Large crowds of Catholics and non-Catholics alike, attend the solemn service and Veneration and this is indeed an impressive, emotional and unforgettable sight to behold.
For the convenience of the congregation, the entire Good Friday Solemn Service which starts at 6.45pm, is televised from 3 big TV screens placed round the church compound, thereby allowing worshippers outside the church to have full view of the proceedings in church.
Come and experience the Greatness, Glory and Love of our Lord for us!
